Perfect Tool for the Right Job
As the picture on the box suggests, this tool is designed for cutting and punching through nylon rope and webbing. The knife attachment did a great job of making a clean, precision cut through a woven nylon strap. It was a bit slow, so I kicked in the Boot Heat and it worked like a charm. One of the other tools made a perfect hole through which I could pass a screw. You do not want much more heat than this because the nylon will burn, melt excessively, and give off nasty fumes. I had been using my temperature controlled soldering iron for punching holes in nylon straps, but I was ruining my soldering iron tips.Which brings me to this. Although this tool does get hot enough to melt solder, it is not a soldering iron. Sure, you can use this “in a pinch” for a one-time job. Any soldering iron which specifies watts instead of degrees is not made for the serious soldering of electronic components. To solder electronic components, you want – no, you *need* a soldering iron which is temperature controlled to 700 degrees. Delicate components, 600 degrees. Connectors, heavy speaker wire, battery terminals, 800 degrees. Don’t buy a cheap pencil type iron to solder on a regular basis because you will become disappointed and frustrated. If you want to cut nylon webbing and nylon rope without fraying, or score plastic, this is the perfect tool. It leaves a clean, factory-looking edge on your repair work.

It works for plastic welding/repair
I have had to repair several larger toys made from .030 ABS and HIPS. This gun works well enough to fuse hard to reach areas for welding. It is not the most durable iron I have used, the first one burnt out after maybe 10-15 hours of use, perhaps due to extended use of the turbo trigger. I was able to melt SS screen into the plastic to reinforce joins or to tack seams to then coat with layers of ABS pipe glue followed by fiberglass cloth and more glue. Seemed very rigid after the patch.

quality control issues
The green LED on my product never lit up, and the trigger made an unreliable contact. It failed after one week.Postscript: I bought a second one to see if it was free of the same defects. The Therma-Boost feature does work but the green LED, which is supposed to give visual indication that the iron is plugged in, is so dim, it is almost invisible. I don’t know what the problem is, but I won’t be buying Weller products again.

Heats very quickly.
I used one before I retired been looking for one to replace the company’s soldering gun, I used a soldering iron which requires a lot of time to heat up, when I received this I went right to work on my side by side it soldered quickly on my electrical what a relief. Nice solid connections in a fraction.

I used this for the first time last week. I didn’t buy this to solder with, I bought it to cut plastic. So far it has worked as expected and I’m happy with my purchase. If I have problems with durability/reliability, I’ll change my rating and review then, but so far 5 stars from me.

The unit didn’t heat quite as quickly as advertised. The Thermal Boost is a nice feature but only works for a short time to prevent overheating. It would be nice if the Thermal Boost would last a bit longer. I was using it to cut pieces out of the grille on my truck. Once heated it worked great and made the job much easier and cleaner than the rotary tool I tried first. You have to really look to see anything has been removed from the grille. It does leave a bit of melted plastic but it was easily trimmed with a razor knife. The pistol grip can make it a bit difficult to get into tight spots but all in all it worked great for me.

Works perfectly ! I use it for electronic (PCB) soldering. I canât understand low rating of this item.Just I wish the boost mode was available always or at least for a longer time. Although you almost never need the boost mode.

Nice tool. Works very well. Got through thick plexiglass with some ease and went on for hours. I recommand for any plastic works.Très bon outil. Fonctionne très bien. A passé dans du plexiglass épais assez facilement pendant des heures. Je recommande pour n’importe quel travail de plastique,

Bought this unit to cut “Sunbrella” synthetic sunscreen material. We were impressed by the specs, especially the “Thermal Boost” feature. When received, it seemed more like a toy, than a purpose-made tool and nowhere near traditional “Weller” brand quality. The unit does not get hot enough to heat-cut material in one pass and the Thermal Boost cycles “on” so infrequently, that it doesn’t help much either. The flimsy cutting tool, you attach to the unit, is so weak that it bends under any cutting pressure and breaks when you try to straighten it. I had to make a stronger one from rigid copper, which helped the performance. This unit is not adequate for anything it is advertised for. Better to buy the larger “Weller Heat Gun”, and various attachments, for whatever you need.
