Works Perfectly
This kit was perfect for me. It’s the second thing I’ve ever soldered. The first one was a kit by another company last week, which was a mess. With this kit, I had no problem understanding the directions. The LED’s at top were a tad confusing at first, but I did a simple google search and figured out that the flat side of the LED is the negative side. Once I got it all put together I thought for sure there would be some issue, but it worked perfectly as intended. This kit really helped build confidence in my soldering skills. Looking forward to doing more kits like this one.

STOP here, order this kit, and GO have some fun putting it together. (See what I did there?)
The MK131 is a great kit if you want to mimic a real traffic signal. It could add realism to a model train layout or Matchbox car display. It could even make a great conversation piece sitting on your desk at the office. The circuit includes a potentiometer that allows you to adjust the timing rate of the LEDs, and an ON/OFF switch so that you don’t have to remove the battery when you’re not using it.I’m an electronics hobbyist, and have assembled kits for several years. In reading some of the previous reviews for this kit, others had problems with the solder pads lifting off the pc board. This usually happens when too much heat is applied to the board. When soldering this kit, you will have to use caution and the right tools to prevent problems. You cannot use a soldering gun or iron. You need to use a low wattage soldering pencil with a pencil tip or small chisel tip. Mine is 40 watts, but you could also use a 25 watt pencil. Use a small diameter rosin core solder, such as .031″. Some of the solder pads are very close together. It is easy to create a solder bridge between two adjacent pads if you aren’t careful. (Ask me how I know.) Although this is listed as a “Beginner” kit, I wouldn’t recommend it as your first ever soldering project. The instructions are more pictorial than text, but if you pay attention to the caution notes and follow the directions, you shouldn’t have any problems. I have two Velleman kits that I have assembled. One of those is the same MK131 Traffic Light MiniKit that I just purchased again. Why two of them? Because I like it that much! Actually, I don’t plan on assembling this one. It will be used as spare parts to repair my first one (if that ever becomes necessary), or the components may get used for other electronics projects. That may sound crazy, but I live in a metropolitan area that used to have several electronics parts stores. The last one closed a couple of years ago. The only way to get electronic components around here now is to order them online. This kit has several components in it. If I had to buy them individually, the total cost would be more than the cost of the kit. The 9 volt battery holder also doubles as the base to support the traffic light kit. If my original battery holder breaks or wears out, I don’t know if it could be found at one of the online electronics suppliers. But with this spare kit, I won’t have to worry about that. BTW, one battery will last several days of continuous use, if anyone wonders. Now order this kit and have some fun!

A good project for advanced beginners
My experience thus far with soldering electronic projects consists of completing three projects when I was in high school (approx 20 years ago) and then completing three more projects recently. My solder joints look ugly but they work well. Therefore I consider myself something of an advanced beginner at soldering – but not quite at the intermediate level! This project was a good match for my skills. It required creating about 120 soldering junctions on a somewhat cramped board. Fortunately, the board was pre-treated with that solder resist coating that helps keep the solder just in the spots where its supposed to go. That made the work a lot easier and I didn’t end up creating any solder bridges. The board and all of the components are included along with sparse but fairly easy to understand directions. There were no missing parts. You will need to supply your own solder, soldering iron, 9 volt battery, and wire snips. There was no troubleshooting guide included but fortunately (and unusually) for me, the project worked well on the first try. I estimate that it took me about five hours to complete the project and I found it good value for the money.

Great Project
Purchased 2 of these Kits , Was very enjoyable to assemble , Just wanted to add a helpful note: please watch your part Numbers on the Transistors there are 2 BC 547 ‘s They have to go in T1 – T2 and the 3rd is a BC557 It has to go in T3 If it does not the Traffic light will not work as it should …. Just thought i would help you all out ,.

Don’t waste your time, save your money
I purchased this and the flashing LED sweetheart kits. I completed both after following the instructions to the letter & triple-checking the work. BOTH products did not work properly. This one in particular had all of the proper connections, but only two of the lights lit up…but if you move the battery around in the casing a couple of more pop on.While I am still new at this I’m led to believe through both my experience and that of others that Velleman products are made of inferior material and are hit or miss. I would highly recommend NOT purchasing any Velleman Products, unless you only want to really just practice soldering stuff together (but even then you may not know if it works 100%)

Great little kit and lots of play value. Not suitable if you’ve never held a soldering iron before. Built for Grandson
Pretty simple kit, if you have a small wattage soldering iron, and some practical experience with printed circuit boards and small components. Very good value, and a very high quality p c board. I’m becoming a real fan of Velleman kits, having built a pair of their 3.5 watt audio amplifier kits. These are a lot of fun and a real bargain! My grandson LOVES the traffic light.

No lights for this stop light! Traffic jam!
I show power thru most of circuit board while testing. None of the lights work. I checked all polarity directions are correct. Even asked an old pro friend of mine and said the soldering job was done very well. Both him and I didn’t know what the problem was? Probably just need to stay away from an brand named Velleman. I’d take a back picture as well, but only lets me take only one.

Nice kit for a 9 year old, too bad the PCB quality is so low.
This was the first kit my 9 year old soldered. There are many pieces in this kit, but most are diodes and resistors, so it is relatively easy. The main drawback of this kit is that the quality of the PCB (board) is very low. That’s where my 30+ years experience in soldering came in… I had to jumper one lead, and solder over a few others before it started to work.

The Traffic Light Kit was fun to build and worked the first time I turned it on. The problem it has is that after several minutes of running the Red LEDs begin to flicker on and off. If I turn the project off for a minute or two, and then turn it on again, it works properly for just a few minutes. Then the same problem resumes, and the red lights flicker.Perhaps one of the capacitors is faulty and discharges internally?Certainly it would be best to use a really fine-tipped soldering iron because some of the soldering points are very close together. It is a fun kit, and good for practising soldering. I like to keep a hand in at that.
