The circuit uses CD4060 as the oscillation and frequency division control device, and employs 74HC138 for decoding to drive 8 channels of LEDs to light up in sequence. By taking advantage of the charging and discharging characteristics of capacitors, the LEDs on each channel are gradually turned off, dynamically creating a “dripping water” effect.
In the circuit, R1, R2, RP1, C3 and the internal oscillation circuit of CD4060 together form an oscillation circuit. Adjusting RP1 can adjust the oscillation frequency, thus changing the speed of the flowing light. This oscillation signal is sent to IC2 for decoding after being divided by 7 internally. Every time a 7-division signal arrives, a low level appears successively at the Y0 – Y7 terminals, corresponding to lighting up one channel of LED. When 8 7-division signals appear, a high level will appear at the 10-division pin. This level is sent to the enable terminal of IC2 to make IC2 work normally. In the next cycle, a low level will appear at the 10-division pin, IC2 will turn off its output, and all LEDs will be turned off for one cycle, forming the intermittent period of the “dripping water” effect.
The driving circuit for each channel of LED includes a triode, an LED current-limiting resistor, a triode base current-limiting resistor, a triode base capacitor, and a triode base diode. When the low level from IC2 arrives, the triode base capacitor discharges rapidly through the diode, and the voltage across the capacitor drops rapidly to close to 0V. After the low level passes, the diode cuts off. The triode base current-limiting resistor slowly charges the capacitor, and the formed base current makes the triode turn off slowly, so that the LED gradually goes from bright to dark and is finally turned off, thus forming the “dripping water” effect.

This circuit is an automatic control circuit for light-emitting diodes composed of digital integrated circuits CD4060 and 74HC138. Inside the CD4060, it consists of an oscillator and a binary counter with 10 levels of output. Externally, the oscillator can be connected to a crystal oscillator or an RC (resistor-capacitor) component. This control circuit is connected in the RC oscillation mode and is composed of the series connection of R1-R10 and the series connection of C1-C10. The resistance value of the series connection of resistors is the sum of the resistance values of each individual resistor. For capacitors with the same capacitance connected in series, it is equal to the capacitance of a single capacitor divided by the number of capacitors.
After the 104/10 CD4060 oscillation circuit starts oscillating, the counter counts the oscillation signals. Each binary bit of the counter continuously flips as the counting proceeds, thus outputting square wave signals with frequencies ranging from high to low on pin Q4-014. Among them, Q4-010 drives one light-emitting diode each from L9 to L15 respectively, making these 7 light-emitting diodes blink at different frequencies. Q12-Q14 are connected to the input terminal of the integrated circuit 74HC138. The 74HC138 is a 3-to-8-line decoding circuit. At the output terminal, only one bit is at a low level at the same time. As the data at the input terminal changes, Y0-Y7 sequentially become low levels, thus forming a flowing light effect on L1-L8. After the CD4060 overflows in counting, it will reset to 0 and start counting again. In this way, the automatic control of 15 channels of LEDs is achieved.

Well Put Together Kit
This is a well put together kit. Each kit is packaged individually with their instructions. The instructions are clear and contain a full, also clear, circuit diagram of the PCB, which is helpful if you want to duplicate the circuit in the future of further practice. It also comes in a cardboard box, which helps prevent shipping damage, as well as a small catalogue of other projects/kits.I do have two small things I think could be improved. First, everything comes in regular plastic bags and I think it would be better to use some ESD bags for further protection.However, my bigger concern/problem is that the instructions were folded up in the same bag as the components. So when taking out the instructions, and unfolding them, be VERY as some parts may be caught in between the folds. This isn’t a problem with the larger tape/real, but some kits have a single part (e.g., resistor/capacitor) and if you are not careful you can easily drop/lose/fling these when opening the instructions.Finally, it seems to have come with some other parts which are not part of any kit. Specifically, it appears to be four boards with 8 large LEDs each, which can be powered from USB-C or by hooking up some wires to the provided pads. There are no cases for them or other information (e.g., voltage requirements, current draw, etc.) so not really sure what they are for and I will need to experiment with them. Still it was a nice addition.I would highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to practice SMD soldering.

Excellent practice kits, but instructions are lacking
I’m about to embark on some more serious soldering activities on some retro computer equipment that is expensive to replace, but was concerned my soldering skills were insufficient. So I purchased this kit and it is excellent practice – my skills are definitely improving. This nice thing about this kit is that there is an end-result so you know whether you soldered correctly rather than those practice boards that don’t do anything. It’s great feedback, and very satisfying when the LEDs light up as they are supposed to. One thing to note, the components are really really really small so I don’t know how I could complete these without magnifying goggles.The only thing stopping me rating this product a full five stars is that the instructions are poor and so I had to do a lot of googling to find out how to tackle the techniques required. They also provide the exact amount of components, so no spares. If you break or lose a component, you’re out of luck. Finally, I made a mistake on a couple of boards, and it would be nice to learn how to diagnose issues with individual components or the board themselves. I figured out the LEDs pretty quickly, but how to diagnose whether I’d soldered a triode correctly was a lot trickier to find – especially for an electronics novice like myself.In summary, if you’re looking to practice soldering skills and you are okay with doing your own research into how to solder and how to diagnose when something isn’t working, then this is the kit for you.

A Teaching Moment Thus Far!
I havenât even assembled the kit, but it comes nicely packed with great instructions. More over it made me realize how actually tiny SMD components can be today. I took a microminiature soldering course in the 80s. Nothing compared to the size of stuff these days. At 65 you would think I have given up by now. However, Iâm now on a mission to get this done. This led to me to buying a quality 3x Magnifier stand. The solder station and tools etc. arrive soon!!

Great tech, sound equipment, but telling you what goes where and how to identify each component could be more explicit. Overall a good buy if you know how to identify what you’re working with. And which side is + or –

FYI – Not for Beginner without an Instructor or prior knowledge
It’s probably a great kit and very helpful for STEM students in a classroom environment. However, for someone trying to learn a new skill alone in their garage, it’s pretty much useless. The “directions” I’m sure make sense if you have done this before, but not very helpful for someone starting from scratch. I wish I had known that before purchasing.
