Wide temperature variation, but extremely cost effective
Even though this is ridiculously inexpensive for a temperature controlled soldering pencil, I decided to give it a thorough analysis with a precision temperature meter. Here are the results (in degrees F): DIAL ACTUALSetting Low High212 212 224482 275 325572 508 572662 585 650752 675 752842 Not Tested (I never go that high)Conclusion: the medium lower settings were not as accurate as the higher ones, so you will have to move the dial up a bit to compensate. In addition, there is a large amount of hysteresis which is the range of fluctuation between the actual low temperature for that particular setpoint, and the high temperature. It is a much wider range than my Weller………but for this price, you learn to live with it! IMHO. An extra heating element? Priceless. The extra HUGE soldering tips may come in handy when the full 60-watts are really needed (since I normally use 25-watts for 98% of my circuit board repairs).I did not try the small spool of non-lead solder or the other supplied larger pencil tips. Note that the other tips appear to have the shank covered in black paint. Perhaps it is anodizing, but I doubt it and would expect the paint to burn and fume as the pencil heats up. Fortunately, I have no need for the larger tips.

Super-Budget Soldering Pen
I finally had an opportunity to use this pen on a set of broken Christmas string lights. It performed pretty well, but seemed to have a problem reaching higher than 660°F. I think it was more than adequate to apply the included lead-free solder in my case, but I noticed that the light (which stays read while heating and turns off when it has reached the desired temperature) would not turn off.The plug and play, dial your temperature approach makes this very easy to use, though I doubt that the temperature dial is very accurate. It’s easy to hold and use with a decent level of precision. It comes with extra tips, a little stand with a sponge, and a replacement heating element (â½).The extra element makes me question the durability/ longevity of the original one. This item does not scream high build quality, nor would I expect it to at $20 at the time of order ($14 at time of review!). The body is made of plastic. The power cable is thick, and appears to be durable, though. At this low price, I think it would be hard to find a more economical option. If you are soldering on a regular basis, however, you may want a more durable tool.

Upgrading from single temp rosin core solder tool
Have avoided soldering when I could figure out an alternate solution which did not require it because my need to solder something was infrequent and when I did, the results were less than satisfactory. This kit looks like it has real promise of making me turn out neatly soldered connections. I really like that the temperature can be varied. I also like that the tool is shaped like a pen or pencil. My soldering tool is shaped like a woodburning tool. The alternatives were shaped like guns. I never upgraded to those devices because l felt they would give me less control when working with very small connections. Have not tried this new tool yet. The kit seems complete, but I am puzzled by the circled item in the photo. It seems to be Item #2 in the parts list ie. stainless steel pipe sleeve. From what I can tell it is a duplicate of the heating element already contained in the tool. If it is, why is the company including this component? The heating element is not a consumable. This item has pigtails. Replacing the installed item with this one if the installed item fails, does not seem like something most companies would entrust to a user. The paper document included with the device presupposes that the user is familiar with this kind of soldering device and this kind of soldering technique. I am not. I need more info before I turn on the device and ruin it because I have used the wrong kind of solder or damaged the soldering tips. I’m not asking for the company to include a printed soldering course with purchase of their device, but the paperwork provided is little more than a parts list with confusing information about how to properly care for the soldering tips and the kind(s) of solder which can be used with this tool. It seems like the several kinds of solder I already have are not usable with this tool.

Heats Up Quickly
I ordered this soldering iron for small electronics projects I’m always working on. So far this iron has done the trick without any issues. They make it super easy to change tips and the temperature control function is great, and not something you’d usually find on this type of iron. Making it transparent is also a way to just make it a bit more fun. I’m happy with this.
