A fun build for a newbie
Iâm new to soldering and electronics. This was a fun build and have step by step detailed instructions. I made some mistakes but only because I didnât read through the instructions first before I started. Oh well, lessons learned. However, the final product was a little less than desired. It works a bit as intended but doesnât recognize some obstacles for some reason and just runs into them and continues to roll its wheels.

May the Force Be With You
So, I have recently gotten into these Proffie board lightsabers….yea, yea…Star Wars nerd….but anyway, they are completely open source, customizable lightsabers. Waaaaaaaaay better than anything you’d get at Disneyland. Like not even in the same galaxy. You can buy these lightsabers fully built out and program any styles, visual effects, and sound effects you like, but they are very expensive. A cheaper option is purchasing an empty hilt and the proffie board and other internal components and building/wiring it yourself. In addition to saving the beans, I mean you also get to literally build your own lightsaber, which is much cooler and a great project. In any case, jumping in and soldering onto these pricey components without having any experience is too intimidating, so I wanted some practice. You can obviously mess around with your soldering iron, but making a nice bead is no guarantee that you can actually wire a board. This kit provides that opportunity. It is very similar to wiring the Proffie board and once you’re done, you have the benefit of seeing if your car actually works as it should. Mine did! Really fun project in and of itself and now I have the confidence to get after DIYing my own Force Stick.

Great practice tool, but ONLY if the parts you recieve work.
So for some context, I was in a soldering class about 10 years ago in high school and haven’t soldered again until this project that I finished yesterday. Although I am still new, I know what I am doing.The project was fun to create, and almost everything worked… until the end. I had received the parts in relatively good condition, however, the DIP-28 items i received had bent pins that I struggled to fix. I managed to get them INSIDE the PCB, but it was a pain.The LED’s worked, the display worked, overall it all worked, but unfortunately, the left rotor or tire, whatever it’s called, the yellow part didn’t. It would not physically turn the wheel itself, but I know it had power because when I turned it, the LED would light up. So I have the entire project except the left wheel.Great set if you want to teach yourself or your kid, but if you notice any broken parts, I recommend you return it and get something else.

Doesn’t Even Turn On
I was very excited to get this kit. It looked great in the packaging. So I soldered for 2 and 1/2 hours straight with all of my connections double checked and batteries in the right place only to find out that it doesn’t even turn on. It was pretty easy to build, it is pretty good quality, but for some reason it just doesn’t turn on at all.

A fun little soldering project
This looks like a fun little soldering project, though I have not built it yet. I did open it up and check out a few things for you though. First, the circuit board is high quality, with no defects that I could find. The silk screen is well labeled, so all you have to do is stuff in the parts. I love these kits that âdo somethingâ in addition to learning to solder. This kit just roves around randomly until it senses and obstacle, then changes direction. And you can set the sensitivity of the detector.There is an included schematic, but you likely wonât need it. All the resistors are the same value (1k) so you literally cannot make a mistake with their placement. The 2 geared TT motors are controlled with a standard L293 H-Bridge motor driver chip, but the 3rd âwheelâ is just a ball bearing. It was pretty oily and left an oily track on my workbench. The âbrainâ of the robot is a STC15W408ASmicrocontroller chip, presumably pre-programmed. I think a full microcontroller is a bit overkill for such a simple robot, but it was probably the cheapest, easiest solution. Both chips come with sockets, so you get lots of practice soldering the sockets without having to worry about overheating the chip (if you soldered it directly). This is very thoughtful, and appropriate for a âlearn to solderâ kit.Iâve taught kids as young as 9 years old to solder with kits like this, though a better age is probably 11-12 years old, or older. At whatever age, this should be a fun kit that âdoes somethingâ once youâve finished practicing your soldering skills. Easy 5 stars here!

Fun Kit
This is a nice little kit. It’s easy to assemble and a good starter for someone who wants to practice soldering. Download the PDF directions and follow them and you should have no trouble. I bought it because I wanted something fun to solder and to annoy my dogs. This succeeds on both counts. It also works well.

Helped to hone my technique
This kit not only provided me with an excellent platform to refine my soldering skills but also allowed me to build a fascinating Obstacle Avoidance Smart Car.
