How did we get our start?
Learn to Solder Kits began through volunteer work in 2015. We were doing outreach to HS girls through the Society of Women Engineers and after using other kits for a workshop that fell apart and led to a lot of frustration, we decided to design our own.
What makes our products unique?
All of our kits are simple enough to be done successfully in a half-hour to an-hour workshop. They use high temp boards in order to hold up well to beginners. And all of our kits are open source and designed and assembled in California.
INTERACTIVE AND KINETIC – Learn to solder in a unique, engaging, fun, and achievable way! The Jitterbug Learn to Solder practice kit is designed for beginners. This insect-shaped kit includes a vibration motor that allows you to bring your creation to life! Hear it buzz and watch it skitter, almost like the real thing.
ALL-IN-1 DIY SOLDERING PROJECT – Whether you’re an adult, student, or teacher, the high-quality parts and intuitive design make it easy to focus on learning or teaching new soldering skills and basic circuit theory. Our kits come equipped with everything you need for success! Each Jitterbug Kit includes a battery, 2 LED lights, a vibration motor, and 1 switch.
STEP-BY-STEP BEGINNER SOLDERING PRACTICE – The goal is for you to have fun experimenting and learning soldering skills, even if you make some mistakes. Our high-quality printed circuit boards are lead-free and resilient which makes them perfect for beginners. Plus, we provide you with step-by-step instructions for each kit to take away any intimidation or uncertainty about completing your project.
ASSEMBLE IN LESS THAN 1 HOUR – Each of our Kits is specifically designed for people with no prior experience, and intended to be a simple and fun introduction to soldering and electronics. It gives beginners plenty of opportunity to practice and perfect their soldering skills without being overwhelmed. Assembly time is approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour. Perfect for college students, introductory courses, kids and teens STEM classes, afterschool programs (robotics), and more.
MADE IN USA – Learn to Solder Kits has different kits for various skill levels so you can learn to make things that blink, beep and move. Each of our kits has been designed, prototyped and assembled in Sacramento, CA, USA and are Open Source Hardware (OSHWA US000135). We love working with our customers and provide support for all of our products.
Customers find the science fundamentals kit easy to assemble with step-by-step instructions. They find the kit fun and engaging, providing a great experience. The kit is a good introduction to electronics for beginners and kids. The components are high quality and easy to fix when they break. The finished product is cute and cool.

Jitterbug Soldering Kit: A Practical and Fun Gift for My Future Engineer
With my son starting his engineering degree soon, I wanted to give him something that would not only be enjoyable but also useful for his studies. After some searching, I decided on the Jitterbug Soldering Kit. It turned out to be a great pick!Choosing the Jitterbug Kit:I chose the Jitterbug Soldering Kit because it seemed perfectly suited for a beginner yet challenging enough to provide a real learning experience. Its user-friendly design, complete with everything needed to build a working electronic bug, made it an ideal starter project for him.The Kit and Its Contents:The package was neat and compact, containing a vibration motor, LEDs, a switch, a battery, and all the necessary components to assemble a moving electronic bug. It promised an engaging hands-on introduction to electronics through soldering, and it delivered just that. The Building Process:He took the kit to his workshop one afternoon and got down to business. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, which allowed him to assemble the bug independently without any prior soldering experience.Proud Results:A while later, he came back with the completed project. The Jitterbug was buzzing and skittering around, and the look of pride on his face was undeniable. He was excited to show off what he had builtâfrom the soldering to the actual operation of the bug. It was clear that completing the kit had given him a real confidence boost in his ability to tackle electronic projects. Why It Was the Right Choice:Educational Value: The kit reinforced the practical skills he will need for his engineering coursework and future career.Independence: Completing the kit on his own enhanced his problem-solving skills and independence, crucial traits for any engineering student.Fun and Engaging: Despite being educational, the kit was also a lot of fun, making it an enjoyable way to learn a new skill. The Jitterbug Soldering Kit was not just a gift; it was a practical tool that helped him step confidently into the world of electronics and soldering. Fun project
I needed to repair my watch by soldering some contacts. Unfortunately my skills at soldering stink. This little bug helped me get some much needed practice in before attempting it on my more expensive watch. The instructions provided were clear and it was easy to assemble. Thanks to this guy and a little practice, soldering the contacts on my watch was a success.

Great quality, easy for beginner!
The Learn to Solder Jitterbug was a fun introductory project for adults and younger kids! As a 30 something year old man, I had a good time putting it together and having it jitter to the song Jitterbug. 🙂 I bought others for kids around 10/12. It provided a great experience. It took about an hour which included me explaining how to solder.

Pricy, but easy directions, fun and good for children who are beginning!
Pricy, but easy directions, fun and good for children who are beginning! This was definitely a bit expensive for what it is, but that said, the directions were great / straight-forward and the end product was very cool. No components broke, everything was high quality.

Super Easy
I got this item to practice some soldering before doing a more complex project. It was very easy to assemble as the instructions (downloaded from the manufacturer’s webpage) are very clear and concise. The only tricky part for me was getting the wire for the legs through the holes and into a shape I liked. But even so, the whole project was completed in about 30 minutes, and I have never soldered before. The finished item is quite cute! I get a kick out of watching it scramble around.

Easy introduction into soldering and a fun project
My boys enjoyed learning how to solder and putting this together. It’s fairly simple and the magic happened once you turn it on. The LED eyes light up and the little motor makes this vibrate and move around the table. The kids played with the legs to get it to move in a particular direction. It was very satisfying to them to put this together. Now the instructions are on the website, but the pdf was somehow messed up in that I couldn’t print it correctly, so I just brought my laptop to the soldering table and we just followed the instructions.

Excellent, but…
…the vibrator device on my unit had a poor solder connection on the device itself. It came loose! Now, one would think this being a solder training kit that this would be a feature…one more solder exercise. Unfortunately, the solder joint is a flexible film joint which appears to be a good level above beginner soldering skills. So….I’m giving it a five star based on what is is intended to achieve. But developer might want to consider using a vibrator with a solder joint commensurate with the kit. That way, if that piece brieaks, it can be fixed with the skill level of the set.

It’s Okay
I bought this for my nine-year-old son who’s into various STEM activities. Since he’s only nine and has never used a soldering iron before, I definitely needed to help him. Plus, you sort of need three hands anyway to hold the iron, the solder, and the jitterbug itself. So it was about 10 minutes of good father/son time while we soldered all the points (about 15 total). It sort of works; the on/off switch is a bit sensitive and we’re going to try resoldering some of the points to see if it will work better. But this is one of those projects where the end result sits on a shelf until it’s thrown out a few months later. Ask yourself if $15 for a 10-minute project is worth it.I would suggest the jitterbug for a slightly older kid, maybe early teens, who can work on this independently. I think it would make for a more satisfying build if it’s an entirely solo effort.
