A fantastic hobby iron.
I have used many lower price irons and some mid price irons for the occasional electronic project and have always been disappointed. They never got hot enough, the tips were hard to find, and they never felt good to use.I needed an iron that got hotter and could maintain heat so that I could solder sections of copper plate and thick wire for a project. This iron worked great! It heats up incredibly quickly and gets very hot. No problem heating up large sections of material. The indicator shows when it is up to you’re desired temp which is very handy. The build quality is fantastic. The plastic used seems to be a thick nylon and is very sturdy. The cord is very nice, it’s not too heavy and easily flexes so it is far less likely to pull the iron around with it’s weight. Even the insulation on the cord has a nice feel to it. The temp dial has a firm click and smooth motion. Overall the tool is simply pleasant to use.I have no complaints. The price is worth it and this will likely be the last iron I buy for a long time.

Perfect, Reasonable Price
This Hakko soldering iron is perfect for my intended use of working on tightly packed soldering jobs, especially surface mount. Whether repairing surface mount boards or attaching SMT parts to breakout boards, the sharply pointed tips available for this iron are great. There are many Hakko and other brand tips available on Amazon. The iron has a light that is lit during heating. It starts out steady and then blinks as it is maintaining the setpoint temperature. When the dial is set at a desired temperature, solder melts quickly at the specified alloy melting point even at the end of a needle tip (less than 1mm). Since it is made for use in Japan, it is designed to operate on their standard power of 100 VAC, rather than US standard 120 VAC. There is a small plastic wrench supplied to access an adjustment under the dial to compensate for the higher voltage. A pictorial is supplied, but unfortunately all information and instructions are in Japanese text. I already had a variable voltage AC transformer, so I will just operate at 100 VAC.

Just make sure the tip holder nut is only hand tight
This is the best soldering iron I’ve ever owned, and I’ve had a few. I’ve mostly sprung for cheap ones, which has been hit or miss for me. This thing heats up QUICK, and has great heat output for what I use it for.I will note ONE IMPORTANT THING: many reviews on here complain of the ceramic heating component fracturing after the first few uses. I believe this is because the tip retaining nut is on WAY TOO TIGHT from factory for some of these, which causes it to get compressed too much when heat is applied and everything around it expands ever so slightly, which would cause the cracking and fracturing. The FIRST thing I would do after unpacking it is undo that nut (you might need a wrench. That’s how tight mine was on there, and trust me my grip has accidentally broken hardware in the past, so it was not out of lack of trying). After doing so, HAND TIGHTEN THE NUT AND DON’T USE TOOLS TO DO SO. That should save you some heart ache, as this soldering iron is excellent ð.

Stopped working after a few minutes of use
The soldering iron worked great for a few minutes, then promptly stopped heating entirely. This seems like a reputable brand, but it’s disappointing to have the product fail within a few minutes.

This is the best soldering iron I have ever owned
This is the best soldering iron I have ever owned. It heats quickly, from plugging it in to reaching the desired temp. takes seconds not minutes and heats from 400F to 930F which covers electrical work perfectly. I bought the interchangeable tips to increase the efficiency of the iron for special jobs and only regret that Hakko does not include the D16 tip instead of the D08 which is already included with the iron. The soldering iron deserves 5 stars and works unbelievably well. I am very happy with my purchase. This iron is similar to the 601 except that the 601 can reach temps of 1000F and is better for leaded glass work but costs $20 more.

Works like a charm unless you need to change the temperature
Heats up really quickly with almost all temperatures and stays there fine. Tip is fair quality that handles solder fine without degradation. But if you have to change the temperature then you better pray you kept track of the included knob that slots into the dial. The strap keeping it to the iron doesn’t stay on the cord like it’s suggested to do and is a pain to use. I have no idea why they couldn’t have just made a permanently installed dial instead.

Perfect
Great iron for the price. Tips last much longer than the cheap Weller’s, and Amazon makes it easy to get the tips for cheap. Dial adjustment is nice, you can crank it up for soldering heavier stuff, or dial it back for more precise stuff like circuit boards. It heats up very quickly, and its easy to tell when it’s at temp with the status LED. I use this thing nearly every day for my job, and it’s been my best iron purchase to date.

Excellent product
Recommend the productI have had the product for several monthsI replaced a soldering iron with a circuit breaker35/120WTwo degrees of heat. This soldering iron is much better even though in terms of power output its power is lower

I ordered this iron as an upgrade to my Sparkfun 937b soldering station. I wanted something more compact yet more powerful, while also more durable. The wand for my 937b would sometimes start to flex if I was applying a little but of pressure to get solid contact between the tip and the work. I wasn’t overdoing it, it’s just that once the plastic wand would heat up it would start to be less rigid. To begin this Hakko iron is extremely durable. It is very well built. It’s very rigid and you can tell from the hardware and fittings that it’s meant for steady work and can take heavy use if needed. Also, don’t let the nominal 50W power rating fool you. That is the wattage you get if you use the Japanese 100v electrical system. Here in North America where we use 120v this iron runs at 74W. Check the excerpt from the manual I’ve attached to the review. 74 watts is plenty of power for large jobs like soldering heavy wires and large speaker tabs. And, unlike the many clones and no-name irons and ironing stations out there, when Hakko says 74 W I believe them! Just because a $15 no-name iron says it’s 60W doesn’t mean it’s true! With this iron, however, you can bank on being 74W at 120v. Another advantage is that it has a 2-prong plug, instead of the grounded 3-prong plug that is on the North American market version. While this does mean you have to manually ground it if you want it to be 100% ESD safe, it also means the power cable is much lighter and more flexible than the one on the grounded version. This means it is more comfortable to use, and the cable won’t pull the iron out of the holder just by its weight.Grounding is easy, by the way; just before you take the tip to the work, touch it against whatever you are using as a ground bus…like the place you connect your grounding wrist strap and/or your grounding desk mat to. Don’t have either of those? Then don’t worry about whether the iron is grounded, because you have far more risk from ESD from yourself or the work surface than the iron!Despite being durable and powerful, and having an easy temperature control feature, the iron is also light and really compact, so I can easily have all my soldering stuff in one small toolbox. It is also comfortable in the hand. I don’t know why some reviewers have said it’s hard to hold, I didn’t find this at all. I love using it. I highly recommend this iron if you want to treat yourself to all the best features and reduce your desk clutter. Just make sure you buy GENUINE Hakko tips. This iron will of course take any of the millions of clone T18 tips out there, but the Hakko tips have so many advantages. Why buy a performance vehicle only to put crappy tires on it? The tip is where the rubber meets the road, so to speak, so do yourself a favour and ditch your cheap soldering iron tips!

I work as an aircraft component technician and Hakko is my new go to soldering iron after Weller went downhill in quality. This Hakko model is a fantastic soldering iron that is well made, quickly heats up to the desired heat setting and maintains it while working. This is something that is quite important when soldering so you can pick a desired heat setting so you won’t over heat what you’re working on.This is the Japanese version of the Hakko FX600 soldering iron which has a voltage rating of 100 volts, 50/60hz but will work in countries where the volage is 120 volts 60hz. There is a version of the Hakko FX600 which has a three prong cable(has grounding pin) but the internals are exactly the same. Based on reviews seen, the three pronged version is twice the price with a stiffer cable that a few individuals have complained to be an annoyance and a safety issue causing the iron to move around the work bench after placing it down or on a stand. The heating element quickly transfers heat inside the barrel into the tip. This is something of a marvel compared to other designs that are much less effective and efficient. You can change the tips by loosening the nut on the barrel and pulling out the tip replacing it with another.Just remember for this model FX600, the tips have to be the 18mm versions and not the 19mm which is for a similar looking Hakko soldering iron (which has a higher heating range). There is also more heating tip options for the Hakko FX600 versus the Hakko FX601. The FX600 is the iron you want to use for most soldering jobs. The Hakko FX601 is mainly for stained glass window fame soldering or more for heavier jobs that require a bit more heat. The cable on this soldering iron is quite flexible and important so that you aren’t fighting against the cable but also so the iron doesn’t start moving around on you workbench.Overall, I’m impressed with this model and as such purchased a few to have around.
