Solder feed is useful, heats up very well, battery life is dependable for most uses
I have had a number of soldering irons in my life, all of which required one hand to hold the tin and the other to hold the iron. This is suitable for most situations but there are occasions where it would be useful to be able to hold onto the part you are trying to solder and be able to solder and feed the tin with one hand.Enter the MakerHawk brand soldering gun with automatic, trigger feed. This is a great solution for when you want to be a bit more one-hand free in your soldering. Setting up is fairly simply as all you need to do is charge and plug in the battery, feed the soldering tin through the gun, turn it on, and away you go.The heat control works very well, which is great depending on how quickly you need to melt the tin and how careful you need to be with what you are connecting. The battery life is good so long as you don’t intend on using it professionally for a full 8 hours. And the feeding mechanism is very easy to handle.My only main criticism echoes another reviewer in that I feel a bit uneasy with all of the warnings surrounding the battery. The fact that you can’t charge it overnight means you’ll have to start charging it an hour or two before you intend to use it. That’s all fine and dandy though you don’t have that problem with a corded soldering iron. If they simply provided a battery that could be charged overnight, it would be an easy solution, one that I’m sure people would be willing to pay a few extra bucks on.Overall, this MakerHawk iron is a great solution for basic soldering needs, especially in those circumstances where it simply isn’t possible to hold both the iron and the tin at the same time. While I got to try this out for free, the price seems very reasonable. If you are looking for a new soldering iron and want to change it up from a traditional iron, this is a great alternative.

Design Flaw
Typical soldering is done by touching the hot metal tip to the wire from the bottom and applying the tin on top of the wire so the tin can be evenly spread out on the wire you are soldering.Design Flaw: The design of this gun is totally opposite. The wire is fed through bottom and the heat metal is on top. This is so inconvenient because now you have to apply the gun and the tin both from top making a mess of the tin on the wire and it is hard to evenly spread out the tin without making clumps. This also causes lead to drop on the floor.Suggestion for redesign: All you have to do reverse the design. Feed the tin from the top instead of bottom. Also why is there a plastic so close to the hot metal?Battery: I charged battery for 30 mins and it died in 5 mins of use. I couldn’t even solder 5 wires.

It’s O.K.
It does take a bit to warm up….and battery last only about 20 minutes to a half hour…… But still. Very convenient when you need to do a car cable repair on the street.
