Great kit for practicing your SMT soldering skills.
I took my time with this kit, and ended up spending several hours on it. In the photo, you can see my super duper clothespin LED holder. That helped a lot. I actually smeared a tiny bit of paste flux below the LEDs, before clamping them with the clothespin. That made them sticky enough to not slide while I was soldering the first pin.I like that I was able to test each layer as I added it, in case I needed to correct any errors before I went on to the next one. I did make one mistake. I added a layer backwards. I looked at the alignment letters, and then proceeded to ignore them. Duh. Easy fix, though.I wouldn’t recommend this as a first SMT kit, unless you’re very confident in your soldering skills. The LEDs are plastic, and they want to start melting if you keep your iron on them too long.As for the finished product, there are a couple of nice light patterns, like the yellow and white one in the video. But, some of the patterns are just too bright and/or flashy for my taste. Also, I probably won’t ever leave the music on.Overall I highly recommend this kit. It was challenging, and I’m proud of the result.

LED package selection could be better
LIked the idea of having an interesting device when completed. It helps maintain your attention to the task at hand. All of the soldering points have large enough spacing that bridging/shorting between contacts wasn’t too challenging, but does require a steady hand. There are a lot of solder connections that must be made and after a couple of hours, I had to give my hand a rest period before finishing. There are numerous sequences that can be selected via the push button, but only one song. The speaker is not very loud and you may not be able to even hear it on the video clip, unless volume is set to max. I think most folks will enjoy playing with it.My concern is that the soldering of the LED ICs (WS2812B) is difficult.Their contacts are very small and you will likely require a very good magnifying lamp to be able to not damage the component. A soldering station with ESD protection (static mat, wrist straps, etc) should be used, along with a good circuit board clamp to hold the boards. The installation instructions do NOT describe how to solder SMT devices until step 3 and 4… So if you don’t read through all the steps before starting, the process will be next to impossible, as the LEDs are installed in step 1 with no tips as to how to pre-tin a pad and align using the 1st pad.The RGB LEDs use a plastic packaging that has a very low melting point and if the soldering iron tip should touch it, it melts like butter. The melted plastic will foul both the contacts/pads and the soldering iron. So some clean up will likely be required. For me, the package damage was only cosmetic and did not cause any issue after cleaning up the mess and trying again. The kit does include several spare LED devices, so damaging one doesn’t result in a complete failure. I lost a couple due to them jumping across the room when being picked up with the tweezers. I also couldn’t get the LED on the star/top to work… then I noticed that it has to have LEDs on BOTH sides. That solved the problem. The LEDs are controlled by a serial interface that daisy chains from one LED to the next, so if one device has issues, none of the other devices in the chain work. So if the basic circuits on the bottom of the first board are good, then at least some of the LEDs will illuminate. If there is a soldering error after some start working, the problem will be with the first one that doesn’t light, or the output from the last one that does. So troubleshooting soldering errors should be possible and “do overs” can correct the problem and successfully complete the project. Finally, the instructions fail to include a schematic diagram of the circuits. For a STEM exercise this would be VERY valuable.WARNING. Make sure the soldering irons are out of reach of any younger kids/toddlers that may want to help and grab the business end of the soldering iron before you can stop them. Same with pets that want to be center of attention.

Looks and sounds great, and has excellent instructions!
There’s a lot of soldering, but if you take your time and test as you go you should have excellent results. The finished product looks and sounds great!Nothing to dislike, though it would be nice if it had more than one song. The colors are nice, though the green generally lacks vibrancy.

As advertised. For soldering practice.
This product is a really good soldering practice item especially for surface mounted components and repetitive components. Not recommended for first time solderers. It is pretty. And it really is fun. As far as a pretty Christmas ornament, it certainly is that, and it works exactly as described quite excellently, and the brightness is excellent. The choice of light modes is excellent. The music is just one song of Jingle Bells but it sound good. The value for money is good but only as a soldering practice item, nothing else, just as it states. But be warned, it is a very fragile item once assembled and it can break very very easily and odds are it will, with just the slightest bump or handling.I assembled 2 of these and noticed the same issues. I’m a retired electronics engineer and have decades of experience so I know what I’m talking about.Treat it like an egg about to break. The design flaw is in the main center support, the circuit solder pads can detach from the circuit board along the center trunk connections with just a bump and is near impossible to repair unless you have really good electronics troubleshooting experience. It really should be encased in a clear plastic shell once assembled.Beyond that, it’s just a for soldering practice.IT’S A SOLDERING PRACTICE CIRCUIT!

Not bad
Excellent value for the money, build quality is good, easy to assemble, I had fun putting it together, itâs bright and it looks good. Fun.It makes for a good gift. You can practice your soldering skills or give this to someone starting out with soldering.

Not a project for beginners
Nice soldering project, but not for beginners.LOTs to solder.Note: that almost all the components are surface mount. They all have larger tabs, but nothing so easy as a through hole component.Great finished project.
