Great for practice for an adult beginner, maybe a bit much for a younger person’s first project
Grabbed this to learn how to solder. Received a more advanced project as a birthday gift from my family and knew that I didn’t want to screw it up, so I went looking for simpler projects to gain some experience with. Ordered this as Oct was coming up so I thought that it would be thematic and could use it as a decoration if I didn’t screw it up too much. As the first thing I’ve ever soldered, there are a lot of pieces, which was intimidating simply from a, “I hope I don’t lose something” standpoint, but they do give a couple extras for the LEDs and the actual project is pretty straightforward. The most nerve-wracking solders were the surface soldering which the instructions tell you to do first, but if this is something you are doing as a first or early project, there is no reason to do them first. Nothing will get in the way, and nothing is dependent on the surface soldering being done first. You can skip the super tiny elements till you get a bit more comfortable with the process. Just be sure that when you get to them you have wherever you’re putting this together clean and clear in case the little buggers decide to flight out of your tweezers into parts unknown and you have to look for them. That can be a pain Definitely would recommend this to someone looking for a project to practice soldering.

A simple and effective way to sharpen your soldering skills. The quality is good. You do need your own soldering tools. Would suggest for a beginner that wants extra practic.

Enjoyed this for soldering practice
I got this product mostly for soldering practice and not really for decoration purposes as the design is not really for me. I can see that beginners and those not familiar with electronic components may struggle more with the instructions and with knowing what they are and their function.

Great practice soldering lights and simple chips
This was a fun quick build that was fairly straight forward. Great starter project. I like the animations on the lights but the sound effect on this is really obnoxious.

Spookily good soldering practice
Great practice kit for through-hole soldering. If you are looking to practice soldering, this really is a scary (pun intended) good value. I really like the quality of the PCBs and the look of the kit. You can tell they have put a lot of care into the set.This may be the only practice hit I have gotten that I would happily show off on a bookshelf.Purchase Price: $18.99Pros:- It is a fun and festive soldering set if you are into that sort of thing (I am!).- Provides an excellent opportunity to learn trough-hole soldering techniques- The end final product is a valuable and entertaining decoration- Great for improving and perfecting crappy soldering skills- Thoughtful, well-planned project with easy-to-follow illustrated instructions- Encourages interest in STEM skills, mainly solderingCons:- Kit does not provide an explanation about electronic components and what they do- Time-consuming due to the need to refer back and forth between the item list and instructions- Product photos do not fully represent the number of LEDs included- Some components may be challenging for beginners- Requires a lot of soldering and patience- Takes some time to complete

Spooky soldering
This is a great little kit with plenty of easy-to-solder through-hole components, plus a few of the more challenging surface mount devices (two voltage regulators and an 8-pin music chip). Just in time for Halloween!The project was fun to build. The surface mount components were a little challenging, but having inadvertently destroyed a KT148A SMD audio IC on a prior practice kit, I was determined not to do the same here. Apparently, I learned from my mistake, because this one is actually working!You will get a lot of through-hole soldering practice with this one, as there are over 100 LEDS, including 2 each of red and green (which are larger). One challenge you will face is in determining which LEDs are red and which are green, as they both appear clear when not “on”. You will need to supply ~2.5VDC (mine were actually brightest at 2.3VDC) to each LED to make this determination, being sure to apply positive voltage to the longer leads.One technique I developed, which I found incredibly helpful, is to use a little bit of putty adhesive (e.g., FunTak) on the non-solder side of the board to help secure components while soldering. This was especially helpful when soldering the LEDs, as my personal preference for LEDs is to have no visible leads on the display side of the board. This also keeps them be perfectly perpendicular.One final note: You might receive spare components with this kit. I received one extra red LED, 12 extra white LEDs, four extra metal film resistors, and one extra monolithic capacitor. Spare components are good. Add them to your kit. Some day, you will be short a component and you will be glad you have these on hand.
