Fun DIY kit
This is a nicely made kit. The PCB is thick and sturdy, and when it is all done, the standoffs make it tall enough to hold the 9V battery under the board and the lid closes perfectly. You can use the center switch for on/off and the extra outside switch turns the center ring of LEDs on and off. As for soldering, there are no instructions, but it is fairly simple. The colors on the resistors are easy to read and everything else is easy enough to figure out.

A good DYI kit but benefits from a rocker switch
This was fun DYI project that is very approachable for a beginner with some soldering experience. All of the components are through hole. There are a few downsides to the way the circuit was designed:First, the way the circuit is designed causes a constant draw from the battery even when the LEDs are off. After I went through one or two batteries without having used the LEDs, I looked at the schematics and it seems that even when the LEDs are off the battery is still powering the RC circuitry that goes to the clock line of the decoder chip and since the reset line is held to ground I think the chip is constantly running even when the LED circuit is open (best guess, not an expert). A quick fix for this problem is to use insert a simple two pin rocker switch (I used a KCD11 switch) on either the positive or ground wire of the battery leads before it connects to the PCB. I cut a hole in the case so that it was easy to turn the unit on or off.A second issue I encountered was that the infrared sensor (1738) was sensitive to my TV remote control. In theory this is exactly what it is designed to do but it can be annoying when it comes on every time you turn your tv on. If you donât need the IR feature, you can simply leave the sensor off and the unit will still work correctly without it.

No instructions on how to power it, poor labeling and improper model from qr scan
Beginners need to know how to actually power the kit, ridiculous that they put these things out without proper instructions, also some of the components were mislabeled and after I scanned the qr code the instructions were for parts and a model completely different.. You need to do better.

Super Fun!!
ok, so this is embarrassing but it was SO much fun! we had never so much as touched a soldering iron before and had absolutely NO idea what we were doing. we definitely messed up somewhere along the way because the switches don’t work, but we did SOMETHING right at least, because most of the LEDs light up. i’m 100% certain the problem was user error, since this was basically just a first time beginners practice kit for us and we did the absolute messiest job across the board. still learned enough that i think the next one will be neater and more functional, and we can’t wait to try more! 10/10 would recommend for anyone looking to dabble in a new skill or who just likes tinkering.

Use the PDF linked on this page, DON’T follow the included instructions.
When the kit arrives, it will have a handy sheet with instructions for how to complete this project. There will be a QR code to a set of instructions on it. Don’t scan it, don’t follow them, just use the instructions linked on the product page above and you should be okay. I didn’t realize the correct instructions were here until it was too late. The included instructions are for a different/old version of this product, and while it seems you should be able to use them as a guide, it can seriously lead you astray when it comes to soldering certain pieces. If it weren’t for that, I’d rate it a 5.

Fun little kit
This is a fun little kit. The parts are on the smaller side so I would recommend this to people who have soldered before. I’m a novice though and this was only the 5th kit I’ve done, and I was able to do it

A nice little kit but…..
This was a fun kit to build and it works as expected however, there are a couple of caveats needing attention after your kit is complete. First, place a piece of electrical tape on the side of the battery facing bottom of circuit board to prevent shorting. Second, the operating current on mine is 25.6 mA. But, it continues to draw 2.45 mA AFTER the LEDS are extinguished. I put a small toggle switch on the battery (+) lead to kill power when not in use. See pics. Enjoy!

Ok for the price.
Instructions weren’t very newbie friendly, but a nice kit overall.

Instructions were not clear, the online PDF was for a different product. If you followed the online PDF you would wire the LED’s in backwards, resistors were not labeled. Product is not for a beginner, unless you are very comfortable with electronics, avoid this product at all cost.
