Weller transforms hand soldering The art of hand soldering has been around for a very, very long time, thousands of years in fact. But it was only until 1941 that a transformer based instant heating soldering method was developed by an impatient American radio repairman who was tired of sitting around waiting for his soldering gun to heat up. Carl E. Weller had to wait until after WWII ended in 1945 to get his Weller Manufacturing Company going. In 1960, the Weller Manufacturing Co. in the US patented the “Magnastat” soldering iron which used a magnetic component to regulate the temperature at the iron’s tip. In an expansion overseas beginning in 1959, the Weller GmbH plant in Besigheim, Germany, along with new plants in other countries, was organized to manufacture temperature controlled irons and soldering guns for primarily industrial markets throughout Europe and the Near East. Keeping pace with the increasing complexity of our customers’ needs, Weller Germany became the market leader for developing and manufacturing hand soldering products worldwide. Our products were proudly emblazoned with “Made in Germany”, signifying innovation and reliability.

A high quality portable soldering iron.
I have purchased several low cost butane irons and all of them were made cheaply. While nearly everything at low cost today seems to be made in China, some China production is truly worthless junk that will fail shortly & you with no replacement parts to be had from anywhere. My last $30 iron was one of these & it looked wonderful but the metal was so soft it deformed when hot and low pressure applied to the tip.I am a Ham Radio operator 300 feet from the ocean and have migrated from lead based solder to the lead free versions which will not oxidise as readily near salt water. This requires a higher heat as some of the wires are 14 gauge and the connectors are substantial. Being far from electricity the only way I could get the power to solder was to use a 1,200 watt inverter and power it from a motorcycle battery and then use my Weller electric iron to do the job. A lot of work and the battery did not last long. To carry a deep cycle battery out to the different antennas is not realistic. This weller Iron does three particular things for me; It melts the plumbing solder quickly. It has a very effective adjustment valve for the gas (heat) flow and it is solid as a rock. More, it starts easily and the controls are effective. I rate this 5 stars because it does what I bought it to do and it does it well. It is NOT a 250 watt equivalent iron and I don’t know if there is one for butane that gets that hot. I would like one assuming it also went down to as low a temperature as this one but I don’t need itCons: The product itself is just fine. You do need to remember to shut off the gas by using the on/off “switch” as at the lowest valve setting there is still a miniscule flame that endures and will remain lit while you put the iron away. I would like to see a metal sheath for the tip to fit into that will snuff out any flame when putting the iron away in its case, one affixed to the case that requires the iron to seat into it to close the case. In case of user stupidity it would not stop the butane from running out but it would stop the heat.

Works as should
Works good and heats up quickly

This is a very high quality product
When you use the clicker to start it, hold the clicker down momentarily and let it up slow. So the flame doesn’t go out

Weller PSI100K Butane Soldering Tool
There were many reasons why I purchased this item, so I will do my best to give a quick, condensed version. As a radio control plane, helicopter and car enthusiast, a soldering iron is one of those must-have items, in your toolbox.I use Deans connectors every chance I get, and quite frankly, I was always having issues with my 2 “Instant-Hot” soldering guns. Just seemed like they did not heat fast, or very hot, and as a result, I damaged many a connector beyond repair. This particular soldering tool is a stellar example of versatility. To start with, it is powered by butane, so no electricity needed. The kit itself comes with 3 of the most common tips, and the paperwork that comes with it shows many more tips that can be ordered separately. This tool is very simple to use: simply slide the gas switch to “on” and use the other slide switch to activate the igniter. Within a minute or two, the tip is at operating temperature, and you can then adjust the temperature up or down, at the butt end of the tool. This is one of those tools which I wish I would have found years ago. Between my pencil soldering iron, and my 2 “Instant-Hot” soldering guns, I could have bought almost two of these tools. I absolutely love this thing, and it comes in a nice, compact box with storage space for additional tips. Now that I have this, in my toolbox, it eliminates 3, corded tools, that were bulky and heavy.

Replacement unit.
After 2 years of hard soldering work in various capacities, the torch valve failed to ignite. This is the third replacement unit. This kit either works or it fails completely, no matter what you do to revive it by disassembling it all the way down to the valve. Parts are not available, so buy a replacement unit.

Still Working After 4 Years
I love buying things on Amazon because you can always look back and see when you bought something.I purchased this Weller PSI100K four years ago (2012) and it still works great today (2016) although tab on the plastic ignitor/sparker switch as broken off and the plastic knob for the temperature adjustment is now chipping and cracking also. (it might be time to get a new one soon)I looked back and paid $78 dollars for my PSI100 in 2012. Since it’s already lasted 4 years that’s only $19.50/year. which is very reasonable for any tool.I’m a security tech and use this soldering iron a couple times a week. It heats up very quickly and get really hot. For most of my work I have the temperature setting as the lowest level which is more than enough. I mostly use the flat chisel tip and occasionally the heat gun attachment to melt shrink tube. When I first started in the security business I used to carry around an electrical pencil type soldering iron but it was always a hassle to find a power plug near where your were working and you always have to wait for the iron to heat up.Butane heat is the way to go. This iron is easy to light (thanks to the piezo starter switch) and is ready to go in 30-40 seconds. I though butane would be a hassle but a full tank lasts me several jobs and filling up the fuel reservoir is quick and easy. One tip I will say is always make sure you have a spare can of butane handy in your truck or tool bag. There’s nothing worse than having two more wires to solder and running out of butane. As far as build quality is concerned Weller makes some of the best tools out there and this iron is no exception. I am a little disappointed that the piezo starter switch tab broke off after two years of moderate use and now after 4 years the plastic temperature knob is cracking. It would be great if you could buy repair parts to fix these little things but it looks like one day I’ll have to bite the bullet and buy another PSI100K.Overall this is a very good portable Soldering Iron with adjustable temperature control and handy carry case. It’s easy to fill with fuel and easy to light. The size of the iron is not too large and is well balanced and comfortable to use even for long periods of time.I would recommend this iron to anyone and when my four year old PSI100 finally packs it in, I’ll be buying another one.

Great iron, replaces my VERY dependable 25 year old pyropen. Lights easily but could use a basic flow control. Tips seem good, as is expected from Weller. The case is odd to me, the lack of storage for even a small hand coiled length of solder is a missed convenience, I suppose I could put it inside the round tip cleaner if dry. Similarly the heat shrink deflector has no storage spot in the case, it must be kept on the heat tip on the iron or left to flop around in the space for tip storage. The heat tip can be stored properly, the deflector cannot. Small gripes…The performance of the iron is excellent, tip prep is of course required as with any new soldering iron tip. This iron can get very hot, just like the original, so extended use (15min +) should be watched. The housing glowing orange, easily seen in low light conditions, is a pretty good indicator that it needs a break! Note: your tip needs to be taken care of in those extreme heat cases of extended use, it should cleaned and retinned as it cools down or the tip will oxidize, (possibly to unusable – my own mistakes taught me that one!!)Great tool I recommend it!

To early to tell yet.Iâve had one like this for years used it a lot it started to go faultySo I took the plunge itâs expensive but from past experience hopefully it lasts as long.My only dought is the hinge on the lid it looks frail but we will see. I have filled it up and tried itIt fired up straight away.I will leave an update when itâs been used in anger ð¤ð
