Strong suction, variety of adaptors
This SMD pickup tool works well. It comes with a charging cord and several tips that look like standard syringe tips. It’s not the lightest pickup tool, being fully self contained, but it’s not so heavy I’d worry about fatigue. The suction is strong, but it doesn’t have good volume, so it really depends on a tight seal with the component. In most cases this isn’t a problem – if a component is suitable for a pick and place machine it’ll work with this. If you need to use it with components without a smooth top surface it will struggle picking it up.It does take a little time to release, it’s not an instant release, nor does it reverse the pressure to make sure the component has deteached. If you foul the component or tip with flux or something else sticky then you’ll have trouble with the component staying on the tip. Even without that you’ll want to release the button, give it a moment, then pull the tip away, otherwise you may misplace the component as you pull the tip away. The USB C charging port is NOT USB PD compatible, so you must use the included charging cable that forces the charger into a standard USB charging profile. Plugging in a regular USB C cable will not work to charge it. Don’t lose the cable, unless you have lots of other similar USB C charge only cables that work with simple devices like this that don’t fully implement the USB C power delivery standard.Overall a decent tool. Not as quick as I’d like, due to the release time issue, but very handy for placing components by hand.

Expensive but may be worth it if you have a lot of SMD parts to place on a PCB
I tested the Picograb Rechargeable ESD Vacuum Pickup Pen on a variety of SMD components (sizes 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, etc.). If one uses the bare metal tip, it has to seal on the chipâs surface to establish a good enough vacuum to lift up the chip. You will hear the noise of the Picograb motor change when you have a good vacuum. I found when I let go of the button, the SMD chip will still stick to the Picograbâs nozzle most of the time so I had to bump it slightly to break the seal. The suction cups are more forgiving in terms of how easily it is to pick an item up but they only work on the larger nozzles for bigger SMD parts. The very small SMD chips require direct nozzle contact. I found the bent nozzles were the best setup for me. There is no way to clean out the Picograb so make sure you are not sucking up foreign material or solder. When I first unboxed the product, I connected it to an existing USB C charger and the charging light on the Picograb did not light up. Once I switched to a USB A charger with a USB A to USB C cable, it charged as expected and the LED worked as described in the documentation. This is a great tool if you are trying to remove small SMD parts from a strip and place them onto a PCB to be soldered. Before this I would put flux on tweezers to try to grab SMD parts but it was hit and miss and it was difficult to get the part off the tweezers and placed precisely on the PCB. With the Picograb this process is much easier. The suction power of the product is not significant but it was enough to grab all the SMD components I tried. Please note: this will not work with curved or irregular surfaces, it is specifically designed for SMD components with flat surfaces. Overall, I think this is a good product if you are placing a lot of parts onto PCBs. Outside of that it may be hard to justify the cost.

I can’t stop getting tools for soldering.
soldering is such a weird thing. its one of those things that is impossible without the right toolsif you’ve ever tried to solder two wires together without some way to hold the wires close together, you understand, it was almost undoable. And it was frustrating. In fact, soldering in general is frustrating beyond compare. There is no other hobby that will ruin your day faster…not even golf.and like golf, you have your clubs, your golf balls and your golf bag. you can’t golf without those 3 things. and anything you have above that, is to make the game more enjoyable for you and ultimately better at it too.Soldering is exactly the same. You have your solder, your iron and your flux. You cannot solder without these 3 things. You dont need to get fancy stuff, but it might help your game. This product is one of those obscure things that may or may not be helpful for you.. if you never knew about it, you might be ok without it.I have recently started shaking when i do detail oriented work. And i’m very self conscious of it.. So ive developed a weird “soldering performance anxiety” where I start to shake as soon as i start to worry if i’m going to shake or not. its very upsetting.Flux makes these tiny components stick to the end of the tweezers so i can’t set it down where i need to, and that means i need to use another tweezers to try to push the component off and now it becomes REALLY detail oriented and my shaking becomes even more ridiculous. You get the idea. With this device, as soon as i let the button go, the component drops right into place. its perfect for me.It may not seem like a necessary item, but it is probably an absolute necessity (for me i mean)I can’t imagine this item not helping you enjoy soldering more. Just like trying to explain to someone the difference between soldering and desoldering and why an iron is better for one, but not the other.fluxdesoldering wickliquid solderhelping handstweezersmagnifying glasssmoke removerall those things are things that might appear to be completely unnecessary at first glance..but anyone that uses those items would probably say they are essential for a “job well done”i’m gonna recommend this product if you do anything with tiny components.

Somewhat disapointing
I expected that it could also pickup the small 1206 smd’s. But it did not pickup capacitor smd’s. Maybe because they do not have totally flat surfaces? This limits my usage of this quite expensive tool.
