Slick little plastic welder
I was skeptical about this since it was cordless, but I think it works well for occasional repairs. The instructions arenât very helpful, but itâs easy enough to figure out. I had several lids from plastic totes that had cracks in them. I played around with a couple different staples, and it worked great. My biggest issue was I would pull the trigger and one of the LEDs would flash. According to the lame instructions, I have a âwire short circuit promptâ, but doesnât say what to do about it. I just wiggle around the staple until it finally works.

Quick and easy
This plastic welder works great and is surprisingly effective, even with zero experience. The manual is terrible. And, with no labels, the lights on the top are a mystery. Nevertheless, this plastic welder has a ton of features and makes easy work of repairs. I’m still amazed that a cordless device like that is available for under $50. I’ve seen larger units that are for bigger tasks, like auto body stuff, but this set is really geared toward smaller things. The kit includes a variety of different shaped “staples” that are all around 0.8mm thick (the diameter of a small paperclip). The staple is held in place on the device by just the spring tension. When the trigger is pulled, the device simultaneously heats the staple very quickly and vibrates it, so the staple just sinks right down into the plastic. There’s even a little (underpowered) light to help see what you’re doing. Release the trigger and hold steady for a few seconds for the plastic to cool, and it’s done. All that’s left is to snip off the protruding nubs with some flush cutters. Everything happens very quickly, so it’s easy to run a string of staples to stitch up a longer break. Plus, because the staples are so small, it can be used on thinner parts. Also, I really like that the device is battery powered. So many of the things that need fixing are in awkward spots and require some level of gymnastics, so not having to tangle with a cord is a huge advantage. One thing to note is that there’s no safety for the trigger – whether this is good or bad is up to you. But, because it’s battery powered, some care needs to be taken on where the device is stored.
